Taiwan’s Stability Is Key to Japan’s Security, and Canada’s Military Role Contributes: Tokyo’s Envoy to MPs

Increased Canada-Japan military cooperation is contributing to stability in the eastern South China Sea at a time when China is trying to “change the status quo by force,” says Japan’s ambassador to Canada. Speaking before a meeting of the Canada–People’s Republic of China Relationship (CACN) Commons committee, Kanji Yamanouchi said Taiwan’s “peace and stability” is integral to Japan’s security. “The Taiwan Strait is very important, not only for the security of Japan, but also the stability of the international community as a whole,” Mr. Yamanouchi told the Feb. 12 meeting. “It has been Japan’s consistent position for a long time that the issue surrounding Taiwan is to be resolved peacefully through dialogue,” he added....
