Cross-Border Repression Is ‘Everyday Threat’ on US Campuses: Report

On American campuses, international students and academics are being increasingly targeted by authoritarian governments that are thousands of miles away, according to a new report from U.S.-based nonprofit Freedom House. “On US campuses, transnational repression is an everyday threat,” the group wrote. The report, released on Feb. 1, found that authoritarian regimes, big or small, have extended their reach outside their borders and engaged in similar acts of “transnational repression” to silence critics at U.S. universities. China’s communist regime, researchers note, represents the “single greatest threat” to international students in the United States. “The focus on China is not without reason,” the report says. Most foreign students attending U.S. universities come from China.
