
Texas Congressman Chip Roy Likens Supreme Court Razor-Wire Removal Decision to Pro-Slavery Ruling
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) compared the recent Supreme Court decision permitting federal officials to cut razor-wire fencing on the Texas border with Mexico to the court’s infamous decision that upheld slavery and helped precipitate the Civil War. The comment by Mr. Roy, who has also urged his home state to ignore the court’s order, came at a Jan. 30 meeting of the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government about the current crisis at the border. He is chairman of the subcommittee. On Jan. 22, the Supreme Court voted 5–4 to allow the U.S. Border Patrol to remove the concertina-wire fencing that Texas erected on a stretch of Eagle Pass, Texas, to keep unauthorized migrants out of the United States. In the case, Department of Homeland Security v. Texas, the court vacated an injunction issued by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit that ordered the federal government to leave the wire intact. Four conservative justices dissented....
