
Marijuana-Related Car Crashes and Deaths Increase Where it is Legal, Studies Find
Marijuana use is increasingly linked to traffic crashes and injuries in markets where it is legalized, according to recent research. A study by researchers from the University of Ottawa found that annual emergency department (ED) visits for cannabis-involved traffic injuries increased by 475.3 percent between 2010 and 2021 in Ontario, Canada. Alcohol-involved traffic injuries increased by 9.4 percent over the same period. Canada legalized marijuana—also known as cannabis—for recreational use in 2018. Researchers found that quarterly ED visits for cannabis-involved traffic injuries increased by 94 percent prior to legalization, while this number jumped to 223 percent after legalization.
