
Mexican Smuggler Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison After Drug Bust at BC Airport
A Mexican national has been sentenced to six years in prison after being caught trying to smuggle drugs in a hidden suitcase compartment at the Abbotsford International Airport in British Columbia. Martha Alvarado-Lopez was sentenced Nov. 27, 2023, after being charged with importation and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the airport seized two kilograms of methamphetamine and one kilogram of cocaine from a Mexican traveller March 29, 2023, after noticing “anomalies” in her luggage, according to a statement from the agency.
