Baghdad Taking Steps to End US-Led Coalition’s Presence in Iraq: Prime Minister

The Iraqi government is taking measures to end a United States-led military coalition’s presence in the country, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has said. “The government is setting a date for the launch of a bilateral committee to make arrangements to end the presence of international coalition forces in Iraq permanently,” Mr. Al-Sudani’s office said in a Jan. 5 statement. The announcement comes one day after an Iraqi militia leader was killed by a U.S. strike in Baghdad. Some 2,500 American troops are currently deployed at military bases throughout the country.
