
‘Absolutely Ridiculous’: BC Politicians Decry Court’s Pause on Legislation Banning Public Drug Use
Several B.C. politicians are speaking out against a Dec. 29 court decision that blocks provincial laws designed to curb public consumption of illegal drugs. The court action was brought by the Harm Reduction Nurses Association (HRNA) in an effort to prevent the Restricting Public Consumption of Illegal Substances Act from coming into effect. The act was given royal assent on Nov. 8 and prohibits the use of illegal drugs in public areas, including playgrounds, beaches, and skateparks. The act allows for fines and imprisonment for individuals who don’t comply with police orders not to consume drugs in certain public places.
