‘World First’ Supercomputer Mimicking Human Brain Built in Sydney
Published on December 18, 2023
A ‘world first’ supercomputer that mimics the human brain is being built by researchers at Western Sydney University. The powerful machine is capable of “simulating networks of the scale of the human brain,” researchers say. Known as DeepSouth, the machine uses a neuromorphic system that imitates biological processes. Hardware within the supercomputer imitates big networks of spiking neurons at 228 trillion synaptic operations per second, rivalling the pace of the brain. The researchers explained by emulating the brain, they would be able to improve artificial intelligence processes compared to current models. Australian researchers at the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) announced the initiative on Dec. 13....
