
Last-Ditch Effort to Reverse Amendments on Farmers Bill Fails in House of Commons

One day after Bill C-234 passed its third reading in the Senate, a last-ditch Conservative motion to get rid of amendments to the farm heating bill failed in the House of Commons on Dec. 13. The Tories’ Bill C-234, which sought to remove the carbon tax from propane and natural gas used to heat or cool barns and dry grain, passed the House with support from Tory, NDP, Bloc Quebecois, and Green Party MPs back in March. However, it was amended by the Senate in December to remove all but grain drying from the bill and axe provisions allowing Parliament to extend the carbon tax exemption on propane and natural gas for farming purposes eight years after the bill’s passage....
