House Democrat, Republican Representing Deep Red Districts Announce Retirements

Reps. Wiley Nickel (D-N.C.) and Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.), who both represent deep red districts, announced on Dec. 14 they will not be seeking reelection in 2024. Mr. Nickel, 48, in his first term, said he’s not running because of how the recent redistricting approved by the North Carolina legislature impacts the district he represents. “Republicans have rigged the system to favor themselves and I don’t have a path to run for reelection in the 13th district,” Mr. Nickel said in a statement.
