
Australia Criminalises Nazi Salute and Symbols
Australian parliament has banned the Nazi salute with bipartisan support from Labor, the Liberal Party, the Greens and minor parties. The new law criminalises the Nazi salute and makes the public display of the Nazi symbol a criminal offence, along with trading goods that bear Nazi hate symbols. Further, the legislation criminalises the “use of a carriage service” for violent extremist material to tackle the “rise of violent radicalism proliferating online.” The Counter-Terrorism Legislation Amendment (Prohibited Hate Symbols and Other Measures) Bill 2023 passed the Senate on Dec. 6.
