Individual Cigarettes to Feature Warning Labels in ‘World First’ Tobacco Law

Australia’s parliament has passed legislation designed to make the nation a “world leader in tobacco control.” The Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) Bill 2023 passed both passes of parliament on Dec. 7 2023. New graphic health warnings will be placed on the front of cigarette packages under the law, following market testing. The precise images will be consulted on in the next few weeks before a final decision is made. Dissuasive messages will also be put on individual cigarette sticks with messages such as “toxic addiction,” “causes 16 cancers,” and “shortens your life.” These messages are in the process of testing but the government said Australia will be one of the “first countries in the world” to include this public health measure....
