Ontario Education Ministry Wins Appeal Over Allegations of Discriminatory Teacher Testing

The Ontario Court of Appeal has overturned a lower court ruling that said the province’s Math Proficiency Test (MPT) for teacher candidates hindered “racialized candidates” from getting jobs. The original lawsuit was brought by the Ontario Teacher Candidates’ Council against the Ontario Ministry of Education, saying “racialized candidates” did not do as well as other candidates on the test, which is required for teacher certification. The Council won its case in 2021, resulting in a court order for the Ontario College of Teachers to “certify teacher candidates without regard to their results on the MPT,” court documents say. Appeal Court Judges David Doherty, Ian Nordheimer, and Patrick Monahan said the Dec. 17,  2021 division court decision was made in error with incomplete information....
