
Portland Teacher Strike Ends With Union Reaching Tentative Deal With School District

Some 45,000 public school students in Portland, Oregon, are returning to classrooms on Monday following a teachers’ union strike that has dragged on for more than three weeks. The strike, which had kept 81 schools across the city closed since Nov. 1, was finally put to an end on Sunday after Portland Public Schools (PPS) and the Portland Association of Teachers (PAT) reached a tentative deal. While union members still need to vote to ratify the terms, and the school board will also need to approve the full contract at its Tuesday meeting, that won’t prevent students from having classes on Monday, although with a two-hour delay....
