
South Korea, UK Upgrade Ties to ‘Global Strategic Partners’
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed the Downing Street Accord on Nov. 22, which upgrades bilateral relations between the countries to “global strategic partners”. The signing was done during Mr. Yoon’s three-day visit to London, which began on Nov. 20. The accord is seen as strengthening the defense alliance in coping with North Korea’s nuclear menace and China’s threat to invade Taiwan. The agreement affirms the two countries’ shared positions regarding various regional security challenges worldwide. During their bilateral summit, Mr. Yoon and Mr. Sunak stated that they oppose any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. The two leaders expressed that “peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is an indispensable element in the security and prosperity of the international community.”...
