CDC Says Abortions Rose in Year Before US Supreme Court’s Decision

The percentage of abortions in the United States increased in the year before Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022, according to figures released in a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A total of 622,108 abortions were reported to the CDC across 46 states in 2021, up from about 592,939 in 2020, the health agency said Wednesday in an annual report. That represents an increase of about 5 percent in that time period, up from 11.1 to 11.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, it said. The number of abortions in the United States had declined steadily between 2012 and 2017, followed by a 3 percent increase between 2017 and 2019.
